I’ve been working pretty hard on a script for teaching new players how to play the game effectively for about a month now.
I’m nearly done with the outline (Maybe 2 days worth of work if I keep my nose to the grindstone) and in the tutorial I did with my friend, which I recorded, I may have missed some things.
If you were teaching a new player how to play, what are some of the most important things you would want them to learn? (No limit on suggestions.)
Do you have a friend that’s considering starting DDO? If yes, introduce me to them so I can take some time and walk through what I’d like to record as a video to make sure I have everything covered. I’ll only do this twice. Expect it’ll take 2 hours per tutorial session (multiple people at once is fine).
If anyone is handy with video editing, I may want a hand.

I think we can all agree that playing DDO is like dating a person that makes you work to get the love. I’m guessing the best intentions were in place when the symbols were put on these puzzle wheels all over the place. It’s probably Eberronian Common or something, but it doesn’t translate to English too well. I’ve been meaning to set this up in the past but I keep getting distra…. SHINY!
In our sorta-used DDO Source Forums, Duck resparked my motivation to try to standardize these symbols to make life easier not only for us vets, but also the newbies that come along.

When I started Source last last year and before I released it to the public, I just grabbed a dragon stamp and added a gradient to make the logo you see now.
I’d like to update it but instead of doing it myself, which I don’t mind doing in the slightest, I thought I’d turn it over to the community… the site is a compilation and refining of the content out there, largely driven by the community. I thought the logo should be similar in form.
I suppose if I don’t get anything I really like that I feel embodies Source, I’ll just make one myself, but let’s say first really damn spiffy logo to come across my desk by the end of the month wins.
Rules
- Must be original… I don’t want to rip anyone off, so this must be completely your creation
- Either vector (Illustrator preferred) or raster (12″x12″ 300DPI Photoshop preferred) final version, though you can send a lower-qual thumbnail
- I must be given unlimited right to reproduce and reuse the logo for an unlimited duration
- I’ll add more here as it comes to mind

Stuff I’m Working On…

In addition to my other podcast and family stuff, here’s what I’m working on…
- Krythan has given me a ton of stuff to add and update. He’s gonna have me busy for a while! I’m getting to all this in time…
- Epic crafting
- Updates to several pages around the site
- More builds: At least 5 people have confirmed using my Toxophilite build and it’s only encouraging me to work on other build articles
- My healbot cleric and FvS work nicely, also trying a new FvS build right now (She’s level 9 atm) that’s really low on gear to see if it’s possible to solo heal Shroud w/ limited gear (no raid stuff, etc.)
- My intimitank can hold any raid boss on normal/hard diff and I’m working on making her hold elite bosses, likely going to be my first TR for the +2 intm, etc.
- My bard kicks some pretty good ass and have had a couple requests for it.
- Only problem with the build articles is that I usually take about 2 weeks to write one if I stay on track to make sure it’s perfect and have people test them out over the course of a month (or more if they’re gear-heavy) and that delays the appearance of the article. All in all, it takes around 2 months from start to finish if I stay on task to get one out. For an example of why, look at the work I put in the Tox build artcile.

Anyone 30+ that’s a nerd remembers this series! It’s awful and I always wanted them to let the stupid little unicorn die, but it’s a classic and you must buy! Formula for every episode: Unicorn runs away to talk to his dealer/pimp or something and the youngest runs after it. The rest of the guys chase them both and adventure ensues. Oh yeah… and short fat dude follows them the entire time and doesn’t do much. WTF?! Why not just fireball? Nope… let’s let the little kids suffer… oh yeah, but classic!
For $10 w/ free shipping (free ship = $25 or more purchase), it’s hard to resist this. Why not buy this and the LX-3000 USB mic as a great combo?
Oh yeah… avoid getting on to roller coasters that are called Dungeons and Dragons!

It’s not just you…

I installed Windows 7 yesterday. I patched Windows first thing, then started the 4 gig d/l for the client again. On a fresh install of Windows with nothing else there, the downloader crashed 6 times. I really, sincerely, do enjoy the game, but please stop trying to make me hate it, Turbine.
Give me an executable. I know how to download those without your manager. Thanks.

I’m seeing a lot of you guys liking the website and that of course makes us want to do more. :)
I’m making 2 changes with the podcasts and posting on the front page of the website:
- I haven’t been posting blog posts as often as I used to because I didn’t want it to push the podcast episodes down. To solve this problem, I’ve put a Podcast button right next to Home above. Now you can just click the button and get all the show notes.
- I’ve posted a couple times for you guys to hit us with your questions/feedback for stuff to discuss in the following episode. I think this is me spamming the front page needlessly and I’m going to try to move away from it. In the future, if you have something you want us to talk about in future shows, please post in the most recent show’s notes. This will keep the number of relevant posts on the front page higher.
What’s a Gravatar?

If you look at any of my comments, you’ll see one of my press photos as my avatar. My elusive assistant here on Source has hers set up too and our guildie Emy has hers as well.
Here’s a quickie to tell you how to get yours here, too.
The website is set up to play nice with something called a Gravatar. Basically, you set up a Gravatar account and tell it the email addresses you use and what pictures you want associated with each email. Any time you leave a comment with the email address you’ve registered with Gravatar, it’ll automatically retrieve your avatar/picture and leave it next to your comments.

I know this is a bit of a departure from our normally scheduled DDO stuff, but I found some unbelievable Jazz mp3 deals on 
Amazon and wanted to share with everyone who may love to listen to it too… basically you’ll get 6 albums (ok, 1 isn’t Jazz) for barely more than $2. These are completely legal downloads and IMO better than iTunes. I have bought several mp3 albums from Amazon, one of which may or may have not been Lady Gaga… maybe…these deals may be good for today only, so I’d highly recommend getting them ASAP. I picked them all up and am downloading them as I write this post.
Louis Armstrong a.k.a. Satchmo’s Hello Dolly (Live) – 52 cents
You may not know the name, but you know his music. Louie Armstrong is one of the most iconic jazz singers and trumpet players in America’s history. If you’ve played ANY of the Fallout games, you’ll recognize his distinct voice and if you have the right ear, his trumpeting. Throw this on your iPod for +3 to your sophistication skill.
Truth be told, I don’t know the following jazz artists, but for the price, it’s totally worth the checking them out:

I just published a guide I wrote for my guild last year with updates and better formatting that discusses how to have a permanent VIPish account for $100. I’d really love feedback on it from the community and checking over it with a ton of scrutiny to make sure everything is accurate and maybe some help with the descriptions.
Before you start, I’m not interested in debate on what packs are listed under the buy and what’s under the skip. These comments will be deleted.

Here’s a new segment I’m doing… I’m really tired of all the grammar errors I find around DDO and the website and am going to start posting screens of what I find. Hey Turbine… why not hire me as a copy editor?
An apostrophe s is not required here. If the sorcerer owned something… like a pencil, then this is appropriate. Example: The Sorcerer’s pencil. This is grammatically correct. I know two sorcerer’s. This is not correct. Further, why is there an apostrophe in “Sorcerer’s” and not in “Wizards?”

- If you leave anything with a bogus address, it will be deleted. I’m the only one that sees the email addresses and sometimes I use them for clarification before approving a comment out of moderation.
- I know there are a bunch of comments in the moderation queue right now. I know that there haven’t been a lot of updates out on the site.
- I’m one guy working on the site. Kristen assists me when there’s time, but she’s got a full plate herself and is trying to manage life just like everyone.
- I own a company that requires me to work to eat.
- I have a wife and 2 kids… they like attention.
- I have other avenues I pursue for amusement. I do enjoy working on this site, but I like playing Fallout 3 and just installed a couple other games like Mass Effect and am probably gonna replay BioShock soon too…
- I have a lot going on in my personal life and I need you guys to all know that I do appreciate updates to sections here and there. PLEASE KEEP SENDING THEM. Please also understand I have a personal life and need to go where I get the money and love. I do this in my spare time. If there are things here for me to work on when I get the time, that makes my next article/page easier to write, but please don’t expect a 24-hour turnaround on a full article based on your suggestion/comment.

I know most folk that come from other MMOs consider platinum the primary currency of DDO, but I’m an old school D&D (more than 20 years) player. I’ll make some comparisons to American currency below for the purposes of my example:

Let’s say I need to buy a new TV. I go to the bank to take out $4,000. I don’t ask for Four hundred ten-dollar-bills. I ask for four thousand dollars. Don’t you? Then why do you ask for things in plat in game? It’s just a larger currency.
In Turbine’s defense, they in the past, have gauged things in gold. Update 5 now makes the standard currency plat. In my D&D games, beyond level 3, we don’t even discuss copper and silver… we just round to gold. In Guild Wars, my first MMO, they have two forms of currency: gold and plat. Very simple, very clean.
When Gygax and Arneson created D&D in the late 70s, it was the first game of its type. In order for the masses to understand the economy, they needed to relate to what we as Americans knew. They gave us copper and silver because back then, a dime was something you could buy something with… now it’s something your kids find in your couch cushions. We could stand to get rid of these archaic forms of currency instead of focusing our economy on ten dollar bills.

I’ve recently discovered that I hate writing build articles… I’ve got my intimtank article in limbo at the moment and I’ll revisit it one day, but I’m putting it on ice for now. The airships don’t interest me personally, so I’m stagnating work there… honestly… you get TWENTY shared storage for your ENTIRE guild and can teleport by talking to the captain? And you’re gonna grind your butt off for this “privilege” that can be taken away (your guild XP decays)? Like seriously? Don’t make me earn something and take it away… that’s like nerfing two weapon fighting… oh… nevermind.
I’m working on translating here a guide I put up in my guild’s forums some time ago about how to go about intelligently buying all the mission packs as a premium player and how much it’ll cost ya, etc. I’ll be working here and there on the guild stuff but my primary focus will be the Free vs Premium vs VIP guide.
We seem to be recording the first episode of the podcast this weekend, I’ll likely put the show out Monday and see how it rides out.
